LIT Teacher --> Gay?!

My EngLisH teAcher who's OLd, possiBly gay but an excellent teacher, went to Bangkok to attend a one-week seminar!

But we're not having any free cuts, though. THere's a sUbstitute teacHEr. He came into class wearing these FUNKY glasses and a tiGht brown shirt! IT was HOT until he started talking.

He's GAY!!! This is where the CONTrOversial questioN comes in: ARE ALL LITERATURE TEACHERS GAY?!

i have friends in other English blocks who tell me their teacher is Gay!! can you believe that?!

BUT ANYWAY, that's not the point of my posting here! I'm so out of topic. I'm supposed to post what i learned from my gay teacher!

Hope you guys find them usefUL!

HeLpfUL nOtes For yOUR LIt Class!

~~BASIC TERMS~~

Point Of View: vantage point from which the author tells the action of a story.

*First PersOn LImitEd [uses pronoun "I"]

*SecOnd PersOn - author addressing the readers themselves, e.g. YOu go to the bathroom..., choose your own adventure books

*Third Person Omniscient - omniscient="all knowing"

*Third PErson Limited (objective) - limited to external descriptions, cannot enter into the minds of characters and make judgments.

Plot: choice and arrangement of events in a story.

*exposition

*rising action

*climax/turning point

*falling action/denouement [French for "untying"]

*resolution

NOTE: Resolution should either be higher or lower than the expostion to indicate change, i.e. the character either ends up happier than he was at the beginning or the character meets a tragic end.

Conflict: character encounters an obstacle to his goal.

External/Physical Conflicts:

*Person vs Nature

 *Person vs Person

-protagonist (victim)

-antagonist (villain)

*Person vs Institution

Internal/Psychological

*Person vs Himself

"If thEre's no confLict, THere's No sTory!"

Characterization:

~Can be developed using the following: direct exposition, action, "the inner life".

~E. M> Foster introduces the ROUND and FLAT characters.

~Characters can also be identified as either STATIC or DYNAMIC.

*Static - characters that do not change.

*Dynamic - characters "morphs into a different creature" towards the end of the story.

Setting: period/locale, physical or sometimes spiritual BACKGROUND in which a story occurs.

*actual geographical location [topography, scenery, arrangement]

*occupation/daily manner of living, routines and habits

*time/period where the action takes place

*general environment (religious, mental, moral, etc.)

~IMPORTANT because it helps set the atmosphere and mood.

~ATMOSPHERE becomes a MOOD when the atmosphere evokes a certain kind of emotion.

~LOCAL COLOR WRITING - a story focusing on a certain place or region. May also be referred to REGIONALISM.

Irony: contradiction, reversal

*Situational Irony - something unexpected happens that causes a reversal of fortune. [Ironic for the characters and the reader.] EXAMPLE: The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

*Dramatic Irony - the audience knows some truth about the character that the character is unaware of. [Ironic for the characters] EXAMPLE: A character drinks a glass of what he thinks is sweet, expensive wine. In truth, he's drinking a glass of poison. The audience knows this truth but the character is clueless.

~Paradox - irony of ideas that leads to a certain realization/truth.

Symbol: a thing in ITSELF but also represents something else.

~A thing must first become ITSELF before it can be used as a symbol for something else.

RoManCe is More thAn jUst MiLLs and BooN!

ROMANCE

  • comes from a French word that is used to refer to stories written in the vernacular (meaning not in Latin, recall your history)

  • can either be written in VERSE or PROSE form.

    • VERSE - also termed as metrical romance. [examples are chivalric romances, i.e. Arthurian Legends, Tristan and Isolde]

  • In the 18th Century, romance was used to refer to stories of the supernatural, something outside of reality.

"Romance is the transcendence of limits!"

~~Limit is defined by logical and realistic thinking. Limits can be:

1. Temporal - refers to the boundaries of time [man cannot travel in time]

2. Spatial - refers to the limits posed by a particular place [a person cannot teloport from one place to another]

3. Bodily - limited by a persons body [man cannot exist apart from his body]

~~In romance, the supernatural is a [prerequisite] condition. It just is.

Romance is always about the impossible! The virtue of romance is that it extends the possibilitiesin fiction. It is ironic in the way that it is about the impossible yet at the same time, it makes things possible!

ADDITIONAL INFO:

  • A tale is a genre of romance. It is a direct descendant of the primordial narrative of man, i.e. legends and myths.

    • An example of a tale is the The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. The romance in the tale is that there is a prince living even after death in a body that is not made of flesh.

    • For more info, read the story. I posted it in the WORLD LITERATURE forum under the topic Novels.

  • Fantasy is romance in the extreme. In fantasy, trascendence is total. There exists a totally new world with its own set of rules.[example: Alice in Wonderland]

  • SCI _ FI is romance and not romance at the same time because:

    • It presents a utopian world. [romantic element]

    • Yet it also presents the destruction of the world. [dystopia]

YES, Harry Potter is a romance book! If anyone asks you why, let them read this post!

~~That's all for now guys. I hope you are able to use the notes I have posted in your Literature class.. If you need help, just ask!~~

so far, there are only two moderators for this forum to ensure the smooth flow of discussion.

yes, anyone can be a moderator, even high school students! but since i am administrator of this forum, i approve the moderators as well.

i think only the administrator can change the titles. for members, titles automatically change after a certain number of posts.
